Every summer when we head down to South Florida to visit family, the beach bag situation becomes a whole conversation. I am packing for myself and four boys, which means sunscreen, towels, water shoes, snacks, and at least one boogie board if it fits. Over the years I have tried a lot of bags, from cheap open totes that dump their contents in the trunk to oversized mesh bags that let the sand fall out on the walk back to the car. I have finally learned that the sand thing is actually a feature, not a flaw.

A good beach bag is not complicated, but there are real differences between the options. Choosing the wrong one means you end up with a damp mess at the end of the day or a beautiful straw bag that falls apart the first time it gets splashed. I have ended up with both.

These four are the ones I actually recommend, across different budgets and different kinds of beach days.

What to Look For in a Beach Bag

A few things that separate a genuinely useful beach bag from one that just photographs well.

Size matters more at the beach than almost anywhere else. When you are packing for a full day with kids, a medium tote fills up before you even get to the sunscreen. Look for something with a large main compartment and enough structure to hold its shape when it is loaded. Bags that collapse in on themselves when full are frustrating to dig through when everyone is dripping and hungry.

Waterproof lining is not the same as waterproof material. A canvas bag with a waterproofed interior will keep the inside dry if a water bottle leaks or a wet swimsuit gets tossed in. That is different from a bag whose exterior is fine getting wet. Straw and woven bags look beautiful but are not designed to get soaked. Worth keeping in mind if you will be close to the waves.

Sand-resistance is worth caring about. Most beach bags trap sand no matter what you do, but mesh and crochet bags let sand fall out through the weave on the walk from the beach to the car. It sounds like a small thing until you have spent twenty minutes shaking sand out of a solid-bottom tote while the kids stand there.

An interior pocket or zippered closure changes how usable the bag is. Open-top totes are easy to load, but your phone, keys, and sunscreen end up buried under towels. A zippered compartment or at least a small interior pocket makes a real difference on a day when you are moving between the water and the boardwalk.

L.L.Bean Zip-Top Boat & Tote

The L.L.Bean Boat & Tote is the bag I keep coming back to year after year when I need something that will hold up to real use. This is a true workhorse canvas tote with a zip-top closure, which I prefer over the open-top version for anything where I am carrying valuables. The heavy-duty cotton canvas is dense enough that it does not flop around when loaded, and it holds its shape even packed to capacity.

The interior is spacious enough for a large beach towel, a change of clothes, sunscreen, and a few extras. The handles are long enough to go over a shoulder, which matters when you are carrying the bag while also navigating kids to the water. The zip-top means you can drop it in the trunk without everything spilling, and if it rains on the way from the parking lot to the beach, your dry clothes stay dry inside.

I have owned L.L.Bean totes for years in other contexts, and what I can say is that they last. This is not a bag that falls apart after two summers. The construction is serious, and you can feel it.

Honest limitation: this is a canvas bag, not a waterproof bag. The material is durable but will absorb water if soaked. Do not use this to carry wet swimsuits directly without a bag inside, and keep it away from waves. It is the right choice for an organized, structured beach day, not for running in and out of the water with it.

L.L.BEAN Zip-Top Boat & Tote Medium

L.L.BEAN Zip-Top Boat & Tote Medium

The classic zip-top canvas tote that has been around forever for good reason. Heavy-duty cotton canvas holds its shape under a full load, with a zip top to keep everything secure in transit. Long enough handles to wear on one shoulder. Durable enough to last multiple summers with no signs of wear. Best for structured beach days when you want something that holds together for years.

Waterproof Canvas Beach Bag with Zipper

This is the bag I think about when someone asks what to bring for a full family beach day. It is oversized by design, with a waterproof canvas exterior and interior lining that handles wet towels and leaking water bottles without complaint. The blue and white stripe pattern looks put-together without being precious about it.

The zipper closure is what I appreciate most on a day when you are running in and out of the water and not hovering over your bag. Phones and keys stay zipped in rather than getting pushed around and buried. The interior pockets let you keep sunscreen and smaller items separate from the pile of towels.

The XL size is genuinely useful when you have more than a couple of people to pack for. Four rolled beach towels, snacks, sunscreen, and a change of clothes for the boys fit without the bag straining. For a family beach day, having room to spare matters more than it sounds, because you always come home with more than you left with.

Honest limitation: this bag is functional rather than stylish. The canvas is practical and holds up, but it reads more utility than aesthetic. If you want a bag that also serves as an outfit accessory, look elsewhere. For getting everything to the beach and back without hassle, it earns its spot.

GOLDTIMO Woven Straw Beach Tote

If I am heading to the beach for a few hours without the whole crew, this is the bag I reach for. The GOLDTIMO straw tote is what beach bag aesthetics are actually about. It pairs well with a coverup or sundress, looks intentional, and the soft woven construction makes it comfortable to carry even when loaded with a towel, sunscreen, and a book.

My friend Anna, who is much more intentional about her beach outfits than I am, first showed up to a beach day with one of these woven totes a couple of summers ago, and I immediately understood the appeal. It is a bag that looks like something. The shoulder straps are long enough to carry comfortably, and the large main compartment holds more than it looks like it will from the outside.

The woven construction is tighter than some straw bags I have seen, which means things do not fall through the weave, but also means it is not a sand-prevention bag by any stretch. This is a bag for looking great on a beach day, not for surviving a rough one.

Honest limitation: straw and water do not mix. A soaked woven bag loses its shape and takes a long time to dry. This is the right choice for beach days where you are staying mostly dry, or for time at a pool where you are staying out of the water. If you are chasing kids through waves, leave the straw bag at home.

TOBEHIGHER Crochet Mesh Tote

This one solves a specific problem: sand. The open-weave crochet construction lets sand fall straight through on the walk back from the beach, which means you are not carrying half the beach home with you. I did not fully appreciate this as a feature until someone in my homeschool co-op pointed it out at the start of a beach trip, and now I think about it every time I am shaking out a solid canvas bag at the end of the day.

The TOBEHIGHER folds flat when empty, which is useful if you want to pack it inside another bag and use it only at the beach. The capacity is genuinely large, with room for towels, sunscreen, snacks, and a few extras. It is lightweight enough that you barely notice it on your shoulder even when loaded.

The crochet construction also means it breathes. Damp towels do not smell the same in a mesh bag as they do sealed in a waterproof tote. For the drive home after a long beach day, that is a small but real improvement.

Honest limitation: no zipper and no closures, which means everything is visible and accessible to anyone walking by. This is not the bag for your phone, keys, or anything you would not want easily grabbed. It works best as a gear bag for towels and equipment, with a small zippered pouch inside for anything that matters.

TOBEHIGHER Women's Crochet Tote Bag - Folding Mesh, Sand Prevention, Large Capacity

TOBEHIGHER Women's Crochet Tote Bag - Folding Mesh, Sand Prevention, Large Capacity

The sand-prevention beach tote. Open crochet weave lets sand fall through on the walk from beach to car, which makes post-beach cleanup noticeably easier. Folds flat when empty for easy packing. Lightweight, large capacity, and good for towels and gear. No zipper or closure, so pair it with a small zippered pouch for your phone and keys.

How to Pack a Beach Bag That Actually Works

A few things I have figured out from a lot of beach days with a lot of kids.

Pack sunscreen on top, not at the bottom. You will need it multiple times during the day and it is always the hardest thing to find. In a bag with no interior pockets, sunscreen and small items live in a small zip pouch near the top so you can grab them without excavating past the towels.

Use one dry bag for electronics. I keep a small zippered dry bag that fits inside whatever beach bag I am using. Phone, car keys, and anything else that cannot get wet goes in there. This solves the problem of using an open-top tote without worrying about a wave getting your phone.

Roll towels instead of folding. Rolled towels take up significantly less space in a tote than folded ones and are easier to pull out and shake off. For a family of six, this is the difference between fitting everything in one bag and needing two.

Bring a smaller bag inside the big bag. For days with kids, I keep a separate small pouch inside the beach tote for things I need quick access to: snacks, keys, a small first aid kit. When we are settled at the beach I pull it out and it stays next to the chair while the big tote stays in the shade.
